Saving Women's Lives in Rwanda

Reducing Maternal Mortality

Each year, ~360,000 women die trying to bring new life into this world. Nearly 800 every day. And more than half of these are in sub-Saharan Africa alone. Shockingly, the majority of these deaths are preventable

While we don’t have a single medicine that can fix the problem of maternal mortality, having a skilled birth attendant at delivery is the one well-recognized intervention that has been proven to save lives.

Dr. Desire Patauli is the primary skilled birth attendant for women in Kibogora, a  rural village in Rwanda. With only limited official training, an apprenticeship with Dr. Lisa Nathan, a New York based Obstetrician/Gynecologist, and his every day experience as a doctor in rural Africa, he has been tirelessly taking care of women in his community the best he can. But, this is not enough. He wants and needs to be a fully trained and competent Obstetrician/Gynecologist so he can provide truly skilled care to these women.
