Equal Exchange wants to build long-term trade partnerships between farmers and consumers, with a mission to empower both of them. They believe that it is possible to create a more equitable, democratic and sustainable world with the contribution of worker co-operatives and Fair Trade production. Equal Exchange want food to be traded in a way that is honest and fair, to all of us.
Equal Exchange empower both farmers and consumers through their worker cooperative. Their co-op has over 100 worker-owners, who all have an equal stake and an equal vote in their business. They have one of the largest democratic worker co-operatives in the country, based on the principle to bring rights and responsibilities that we hold as citizens in our communities to the workplace. At Equal Exchange they wanted to change the world of food. They were the first US food or beverage company to formally adopt the international Fair Trade standards in 1991.
When you shop at Equal Exchange you make sure you buy fair, sustainable products that empower both farmers and consumers. More than 97% of their coffee and 100% of their tea and chocolates are certified organic.
